Bitter is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-centered, Smart-ass, Or, why You Should Never Carry a Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office : a Memoir

I just finished reading (actually listening) to this book.  It was hilarious but I mostly enjoyed Jen Lancaster's tart and truthful commentary.  Not that I would ever publicly shred someone or something at that level it was still fun to read.  Being that I have a one) have a fashion background  and 2) grew up in Illinois it was easy to relate to some of the scenarios that were applied in the book.  Of course there were very heartfelt moments when Jen realized that she had to give up the material things to take care of her depressed husband or when she took the greyhound bus to be by her injured mother's side.

Every chapter that she wrote I related to in some way whether it was how people addressed me or navigating through the tough economy.  It was definitely worth the read.  It is likely the person who reads this book is going to know that it is was written as memoir when they pick it up but I had no idea until the epilogue!!

Quack's 43rd Street Bakery

My husband and I frequented this bakery quite a bit this summer.  Tucked away in the historic Hyde Park district of Austin, Texas it is one of those secret delights.  Quack's 43rd Street Bakery serves until midnight and very well maybe the only one, at least the only one that I have come across.  The shop is always full of the young and young-at-heart visiting their friends, sorting themselves by writing their thoughts, or perhaps studying for what tomorrow may bring.  Quack's  which is owned by Art Silver was the very first coffeehouse in Austin and was originally located on the Drag next to the University of Texas.

My favorite thing about Quack's 43rd Street Bakery is that all of their pastries, muffins, confections, pies, and cakes actually taste wonderful.  When I say wonderful it is high mark for food since my pallet is extremely picky.  My friends and family privately know me as a food critic.  The majority of cupcakeries, bakeries, and dessert foodie trucks around here I strongly dislike as they cater to the American's preference of too much sugar and not enough flavor.  This bakery has more of the European hand by not overpowering the taste with an overload of sugar.  They bake goods fresh for you every single day.

If you do decide to make a late night of it then check out the glass case just right of the cash register.  There is always a surprise waiting as only that case carries pastries that are buy one get one free after 6:30pm.  You can never predict what you will end up with but you can be sure it will be delicious.  One night on a whim I chose the Apple Danish, now I am hooked.  I have never been one for a danish prior to this bakery.  Try heating it for 10 seconds, it will melt in your mouth.

However the very first crumb I ever tasted from this bakery was the Mint Ganache Chocolate Cake.  It was this cake that determined that it was okay to pick up a bakery dessert for guests whom you are entertaining at your home.  No longer did I feel the pressure of having to hand make the desserts if I wanted something delicious to share for at a dinner party.

You may decide to stop in if your hungry for a more sturdier meal and something to wash it down.  Quack's carry a small assortment of sandwiches, salads and such that invite the carnivore, vegetarian or vegan in you.  Of course they accommodate the Austinites who need TopoChico bottle to swig from.

I will admit that I am somewhat partial to a place that makes anything French.  Check out these adorable French shortbread and sugar cookies.  So inexpensive I might add.

My priority list of goodies to try next time I visit has already too many for one day.  They include the beautiful Key Lime pie and the Peanut Butter Fudge cake.

Do Women Hate Attractive Women?

When I flipped open the June issue of my beloved Marie Claire magazine to this page I immediately assumed the answer to the title was 'definitely not!', why would they?  Boy did I have something to learn about the writer of the essay.  I mean come on. I don't know of any woman who actually hates another because of her looks, it is strictly based on attitude.  Call it compassion or motherly instinct or just femininity but I love women who are beautiful.  And yes I am straight and very married to my loving husband.  But really there is something about the girlfriend bond.  We love each other and we love each others beauty.  I had two gorgeous blonde bombshells as my bridesmaids at my wedding and another one of my best friends is a 6'11" blonde hair, blue eyed Vanna White who would have been a bridesmaid had I known her back then too.

My take on Samantha Brick is that women display dislike because of her horrible attitude and the dislike is definitely not aimed at her self-acclaimed beauty.  I've never seen her before this article and now all that sticks in my mind is her not nice, I'll take what I want attitude.  Who cares if you are physically pretty just as long as you have a PRETTY HEART!!!!  Hopefully she will realize that internal beauty is all that really matters.  Now don't get me wrong I love my Clinique Red-y to Wear red lips!!  I am a fashion girl at heart. But seriously...

Please comment and tell me what you think?  I am so curious know.

DO WOMEN HATE ATTRACTIVE WOMEN?
Marie Claire Magazine June 2012

Viral sensation Samantha "Don't Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful" Brick launched a global debate about how women feel about one another's looks. Cultural commentator Jami Floyd explores an unexpected phenomenon.

WOMEN DESPISE gorgeous women. That's what 41-year-old British journalist Samantha Brick asserted in a now-notorious essay published in the U.K.'s Daily Mail. Her proof? Firsthand experience, of course. "There are downsides to being pretty—the main one being that other women hate me for no other reason than my lovely looks," she wrote.
Within hours, Brick's essay went viral, with countless people worldwide weighing in via online comments and Twitter to disabuse her of this notion. Their message, as Brick herself puts it: She's no Elle Macpherson. But they weren't that polite. As one commenter wrote, "No, love, [women] don't hate you because you are beautiful (which you aren't, really). They hate you because you are a smug, self-satisfied, deluded, vacuous idiot."
Reading all of this, I began to wonder: Does Brick have a point? I reflected on many conversations with my female friends about how we regard the other women in our lives. Never can I remember a nasty comment directed at another woman simply because she was attractive.
In my life as a journalist, I've met some of the women our culture reveres as the most beautiful in our midst—Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, Anne Hathaway, Beyoncé. When these stunning celebrities enter a room, a hush falls over the crowd. Then people "ooh" and "ahh" and chatter about what these goddesses are wearing and how well they're wearing it. The women fawn the most. I have never heard one mutter a mean-spirited comment in a beautiful star's direction.
But somehow, Brick is having a different experience. Not once, she laments, has a friend asked her to be a bridesmaid, out of fear, she claims, of being overshadowed by her good looks. She also says she's been dropped by "countless friends who felt threatened if I was merely in the presence of their other halves."
A day after the piece ran, the Daily Mail delivered a follow-up. Brick described how she wept in response to the global wave of acerbic messages she had received. But perhaps what's most stunning is that all of the nastiness she's encountered has only reinforced her belief that people hate her because she's beautiful.
What really seems to be happening here, which Brick doesn't seem to grasp: Many women became angry with her not because of her looks, but for perpetuating a culture in which women judge each other by attractiveness rather than achievement. Most women have moved beyond that. Brick, it seems, has not.
Some women don't blame just Brick for spreading that message. Several of my female friends have been critical of the Daily Mail, accusing the paper of exploiting Brick as well as its readers. As one said: "Come on! They are begging us to go all Mean Girl on Samantha Brick."
The Mail has been reaping the rewards in traffic ever since. And men have certainly been enjoying the catfight, too.
But not every woman has joined the fray. Brick received e-mails of support from women who claim to have had the same experience: "Samantha was brave to make this observation in public ... I hope that she doesn't take the nasty comments to heart."
So, while there may always be mean women (and men) who anonymously fire off a torrent of abuse online, ready to pounce on those who stick their heads above the parapet, Brick can rest assured that most women in the world don't despise her because she's pretty or because she dared to think so. Most women are kind and empathetic, supportive and sustaining. Those are the women Brick needs in her life, online and off. Perhaps the fault, dear Samantha, is not in your face, but in your friends.

P.S. Yes I know I just read finished the June article in July....I got a little backed up.  Hey it happens to the best of us.

Summer Cocktail: Frutta d'Isola

This is my current favorite summer cocktail.  It has been so popular from when I very first made it in June that every time we go to friends or have a get together it is requested.  The catch is that I am super picky when it comes to drinks, I don't like anything berry or funny flavored.  This drink is superb!

1 750 ml bottle of Heart & Soul Moscato
1 33.8 fl oz bottle of Central Market Organics Italian Soda Frutta d'Isola
1/2 bag of frozen peaches.

Note that you really need to have the Heart & Soul brand of Moscato.  Each brand of moscato varies in the fruitiness and the floweriness.  Heart & Soul compliments this Italian soda (directly from Italy) perfectly.

This recipe makes 2 quarts which is a perfect amount for a small dinner party.  If you are having this with several girlfriends then make sure you double up the recipe to make a gallon!

Just pour all of the liquid contents into the pitcher and stir.  Add the frozen peaches last and they will double as ice cubes and garnish.

Chicken Naan Pizza

This recipe is super yummy and there are two different ways that you can make it.

Prep: 10 minutes   Bake: 15 minutes

6 ounces pre-cooked Grilled Chicken Strips
1 container of Garlic Pesto
1.5 cups cut Red, Orange, and Yellow Bell Peppers
2 teaspoons McCormick Italian Herb Grinder seasoning
Cookwell & Company all natural Cracked Pepper Vinaigrette
1 large Naan Flat Bread or 2 small Naan Flat Bread
1 container of Feta Cheese
optional:
1.5 cups shredded Mexican Blend Cheese
The recipe called for this it is not necessary and is likely there for aesthetic value.  You can choose to use only the feta or do a mix with the feta and the shredded cheese.

1.  Preheat oven to 425 degrees
2.  Dice bell peppers small, place diced peppers in a Ziploc bag with a few teaspoons of the cracked pepper vinaigrette and the Italian herb seasoning to marinate.
3. Bake Naan bread directly on the oven rack for a few minutes on both sides until bread doesn't feel limp; Once complete take out of the oven and transfer the naan to a pizza pan or baking sheet.  Spread the garlic pesto over the crust.  Layer the chicken and peppers next.  Then top with feta cheese.  At this point if you choose to use the Mexican blend cheese then add it now.  It does look so much prettier.
4.  Return topped crust to oven, baking 10 minutes or until toppings are hot and cheese melts.

Thank you HEB for giving me this super idea.

The Fun Car of My Dreams

One evening John and I went to for a company meet up at a local dive bar. Upon our arrival we parked near a super fun car that I now want to create myself.  I have wanted a Volkswagen bug since I was 14 and have only dreamed of one.  Note I said bug not beetle!  I want one of the cute originals in a beautiful light powdery blue with a soft top and another of practically any color in a hard top.

Now everyone knows that I am quite the do-it-yourself  creative type so seeing this car really has me going.  I want to find a junker that runs and deck the baby out to my strongest desire.  If I could fill an olympic size swimming pool with glitter, diamonds, rhinestones, and anything sparkly I would.  Be sure to add the diving boards.  Seriously when Mr. McDuck in Ducktales swam in his gold is honestly what I am envisioning with anything sparkly and glamorous.  Call me a girl.

This car actually reminds me of how my bedroom(s) where decorated during my jr. high and high school years.  The outlandish creative girl where schoolmates were surprised that I could do something cool.  Yes I majored in fashion and I loved to be a trendsetter but I think I was far too early for my years because it wasn't always an appreciation of the coolest with teenagers.  Eventually some things I did caught on.  Remind me and I promise I will post some old pictures one day.

Anyway here is this crazy awesome car.  Points for the artist who spent their time and energy creating such a wonderful piece.  I hope that I run into you and your car again someday!

Parmesan-Basil Crusted Tilapia

Today we experimented with the scary meat of "FISH".  Ewwwww is what I want to say but it was DELISH!  John and I have been so exhausted of red and white meat (beef, pork & chicken) lately that we are desiring the vegetarian life-style but know our bodies could not sustain that way.  The past two grocery trips I have found myself lingering in the seafood department, no doubt with my nose closed.  The latest trip my husband found me lingering in seafood for a second time in 15 minutes after I had forgotten something in the produce department and had to beeline back.  Thankfully a nice fresh fish-market man asked how we were doing and I broke down to tell him that I hate fish but love seafood and didn't know what to do.  The idea of touching and cooking fresh fish made me want to jump out of my skin.  For the record I do prepare scallops all the time without getting the heebie-jeebies but decided that we needed to settle on something that wasn't $20 per pound.  The market man gently coaxed me into some fresh tilapia.  Okay I have consumed tilapia once or twice before and could remember it hadn't been horribly fishy.  No foul odors to think of. So I grabbed just enough for two portions.  Did not want to get stuck with any leftover foreign subject.

1/2 c - Dried Breadcrumbs (Easily kept on-hand in the pantry)
1/8 c - Shredded Parmesan (Increase to preference)
1/2 t - basil
1/8 t - salt
1/8 t - garlic
Extra Vigin Olive Oil
Non-stick cooking or Spray EVOO

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.  In a small bowl mix the breadcrumbs, parmesan, basil, salt, and garlic. After mixing the dry ingredients add a very tiny amount of extra virgin olive oil into the mixture just to make it slightly sticky.  Just shy of the consistency of a strudel.   Rinse the tilapia under cool water then place in the breadcrumb mixture and coat.  Place the fish on a baking sheet that has been prepared with a light spritz of extra virgin olive oil or non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.  Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the fish flakes.  Tilapia tends to increase in size during the cooking process.

Serve with a light side of vegetables.  Nothing too heavy for this entree (potatoes, etc).

French Macarons

Good Morning Everyone!  I want to apologize as it has been more than one month since I posted anything.  Excuses Excuses right!  Well lets just settle on one thing....My laptop has been undergoing surgery.

Anyway are you ready for the French Macarons!!!

French Macarons: Try One

First you must have almond flour.  This is one of the main reasons purchasing French Macarons are so expensive, the flour is $13.00 lb.   You can chose to hand make your own almond flour if you wish, same with any other nut flour.

Then grab your confectioners sugar in the blender along with your almond flour and until combined.  Be sure to use a large enough blender or food processor that will fit your mixture accordingly.  Sift your mixture afterward.  I like the old fashion hand sifter but if your muscles are weaker (okay I have super wimpy muscles) or if you don't have one use a metal strainer as it will do the job just fine.

While preheating oven work on the egg white & sugar mixture to create stiff peaks.  Must whisk and a high speed at to do this.  Unfortunately this is the step that my French Macarons failed!!!  I tried to whisk by hand for almost 1.5 hours.  It became so horribly monotonous that I even spoke on the phone to my Gramma while whisking.  I really don't know how the old Parisian Chefs used to do this by hand?  I could never get a good peak to form.  My word of advice...Do not attempt this unless you have a stand mixer.

Because I had already made my almond flour mixture I wanted to see what the result was going to be when I would combine it with the barely peaked white mixture.  A huge gloppy sticky mess.  Oops!!  Lesson learned.

Since the mixture was way to sticky and thick then there was no hope to put it in a pastry bag so that it would pour out.   Lets bake, taste and toss!  A big no-no to bakers out there who spend a fortune on the ingredients. In fact I should say lets stick ice cream in the middle and make ice cream sandwiches.

FRENCH MACARONS:  TRY ONE   -  BUST!!!!

French Macarons:   Try Two

Tips for the second try:
-Measure in grams
-Use a stand mixer to whisk or have a some sort of electric powered whisk
-Don't waste any mistakes, depending on what step you may be able to correct before it goes to far
-Go Angry Baker on it!!!
-Use only a clean glass or stainless steel bowl to whisk eggs.  Never plastic because of lingering oils
-Always bake macarons on a double baking sheet

Making sure the macaron batter was a glistening smooth consistency that was slightly thick I piped one inch circles onto parchment paper.

Of course the purple was my super favorite color.  Only use gel or powdered food coloring.  Add color after the stiff peaks form in the egg white mixture.  After piping on the tray let skin form over for about 20 minutes.

Bake at 275 degrees for approximately 18 to 20 minutes.  Be sure of how your oven cooks.  Never remove the macarons from oven prior to being done, but you may open your oven door to turn the tray without pulling it out.    It is always better to bake at a lower temperature for a longer time than to have overdone macarons.

Let cool completely before removing from pan or you'll end up with them sticking!

Fillings used: Bavarian Buttercream, Espresso, Pistachio, Chocolate Ganache, and White Chocolate Ganache.  Be sure to represent the flavor of the macaron by the color of the shell.  These were rolled in chocolate vermicelli.

DELISH!

Determine how you will package them!

Present to your friends :-)

YUM-O!!

P.S. - American Macaroons are completely different from French Macarons and Parisian Macarons.

Update 8-9-12

So apparently I made the cover page of Envy Pastries June Macaron class facebook photos!!  Who cares that it was after 8 hours of work and 3 hours of play and my hair and face was melted from the Texas heat.  I have beautiful pastries made by me :-)  Thanks Heidi!!

Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 - May 6, 2012

Okay I know I am very late watching Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 but there is a very good reason.  I was never seriously into any of the Twilight movies.  In fact I never once had the urge to go to the theater for any of the first 4 movies.  However, one day while visiting San Marcos, Texas my husband and I stumbled upon this amazing bookstore in downtown.  One that sold all their books for $2.00 or less on a dated scale.  Meaning they were all pre-ticketed with 3 dates and 3 prices and if the book was on the shelf when the second and third date hit the the price dropped to the next level.  Well needless to say I got 3 of the 4 Twilight Saga books for less than $5.00 so I bought them.  This was way back in July and I had to really motiviate myself to read them. Finally I cracked open cover in September.  Now before reading the book I was a firm believer that the acting in the Twilight movies 1 through 3 was terrible.  I totally felt that the storyline had potential in the movies but acting...UGH!!!  As I began to read the first book I started to understand why the casting was done as it was and why the movies were written as they were.  However, I was never trulyable to appreciate the books until I started Breaking Dawn as I had seen the first three movies on DVD so it left little to properly imagine.  Anyway, I continued to tell myself through all of these books that I needed to finish them before the last movie was released in theater so I could actually see it on the big screen for the final judgement.  Okay so I finally finished the last book on May 6, 2012, yes I know I am a slow reader.  I'm very busy so there is not a whole lot of time to put into reading a leisure book.  By noon I finished the book and was super excited to watch the movie today.  The Breaking Dawn book was totally amazing.  Absolutely excellent. Details were great.

THE MOVIE:  .......Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1:   SUCKED!!!  Absolutely horrible.  I will state this up front.  I am no longer biased because I have read the book and can honestly say that the movie was horrible not due to the acting but solely because of the director/movie direction. Utter Crap!!   The movie completely strayed away from the book.  Let me make very clear for those who have never read the book and only seen the movie that the wolf physical fight scene never actually happened.  Not once!  So many necessary moments were skipped in the movie and so many fake stories were added in.  They could have definitely found a better way to portray the book in 2 hours or less if time was a concern to the director.

Now what I don't understand is when I read movie reviews online why I haven't run across someone who has actually read the book and dislikes it.  The only reviews I find are either A) you liked the movie and never read the book or B) you hate the movie but never read the book to actually have anything to compare it too.

REALLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All I can say now is please, please, please read the book.  My teachers could never persuade me that books are always better than movies.  But Twilight has made me a firm believer.  Maybe that is why Bella Swan appreciates Wuthering Heights.

Numero Uno: The Bathroom

Since March I have been trying to redo our bathroom in our one bedroom apartment.  Yes when we moved to Austin we downsized to a one bedroom, laugh if you want....I chastise it mostly.  But now I will do anything to keep from moving again, that is until we finally purchase a home.  Anyway needless to say since we were without our furniture for two years due to our constant moving one bedroom seemed appropriate.  Now furniture is here and two years later I have new taste.  Imagine that.  To keep from breaking the piggy bank and from investing in a whole new look for an apartment rather than a house I have decided we will spruce up a few key elements.  The Bathroom is numero uno.

Last fall I really wanted to go Parisian in the bathroom with soft blues and chocolates. But really we have all the necessary bathroom equipment from our Florida styled home.  So instead I went for a little inspiration at my husband and I's favorite sandwich & salad stop Newk's Express Cafe.  I painted one accent corner Aruba Blue from the Benjamin Moore paint collection and left the frames and rest of the bathroom white.  But really the blue paint on its own was way out of place until I realized I needed a pop of a serious contrasting color.  I quickly went out and got a $13 orange heliconia plant.  Why I didn't realize that Newk's had already placed the same plant in their bathroom when I picked up the paint color I do not know.  Now this past week I have been desperately attempting to keep the plant alive but that is another story.  Who knew that Heliconias are suspectible to root rot!  I am not a green thumb, for we live in an apartment for pete's sake.  Anyway that is why you do not see the plant in the photo below.

Now the question is to do or not to do......  The bathroom mats are ready to be replaced and I really want a bamboo or wood to add to the tropical vibe.  I have searched high and low and these wood and bathroom mats start at $70 and go up for just one.  Not only are the expensive but it is extremely difficult to find the color and size and other details that would fit just perfect.  So I have been patient.  Until NOW!!!  Two days ago I went to Target and spotted a mahogany wood bath mat for $24.99.  I immediately bought two.  The wood style and color coordinated with our bamboo/wood bronze weave in the fixtures so why not try. But now I am unsure......I need help to decided.  Please offer your opinions.

1.  Will a wood bath mat from Target actually hold up and serve its purpose?? I mean there has to be a reason that I can't seem to find those type of matts anywhere else for less than $70 right???

2.  This seems to be a lacquered wood of some sort?  Not sure but I can tell you it is shiny ....so are we going to slip when stepping out of our GIGANT-O garden tub?  And I do mean gigantic!!  There is like a 3 foot drop when getting out.

3.  Then again I have got to remember I am sprucing up an apartment for cheap.  That is the whole point so maybe, just maybe these are the way to go.

Help I need answers.  I am so waiting to take those tags off until I hear some equalizing advise.

Next stop will be the shower curtain.  Well actually we don't even use a shower curtain in our bathroom due to some crazy shower door design that the apartment community put on our giant garden tubs.  All I can say is... REALLY??!!!!!!!  But once again I stumbled upon amazing inspiration at my dearest friend Rhonda's home where she put a second large shower rod above the permanent apartment rod fixture and draped her curtains from high above.  Just beautiful.  So now I am going to attempt the same thing but instead have the curtains swept to the side for aesthetic value.  I am thinking white but not sure b/c the rest of the bathroom is white.  If I find a coordinating color will it be too much???  I see that Target has all of there amazing $35 fabric shower curtains on clearance for $10 now. Any suggestions???

Until next time....

Update 8-12-2012

It has been several months since I have posted anything about the bathroom project.  Since I last posted I have added the Pottery Barn Tava Accessories Set, a Bromeliad (which has already been replaced by a second Bromeliad), and few minor things here and there.

Meeting Tim Gunn

Aright! Meeting Tim Gunn was phenomenal!! Probably the best that anyone could have imagined. You know how brutally honest Tim can be (thankfully he can be honest to help you out of your rut). He will tell you if he absolutely does not like something, and vice verse. He said to me.... I love your style from head to toe (thank goodness b/c i never wear my hair curly anymore since I'm in that awkward in between stage from an extreme chic bob to long hair). He even had me do the twirl!!! Thank goodness to my senses as I woke this morning!! Thank goodness to the Texas air for being a cool 75 degrees so that I could where a great outfit. Praise to my navy plaid Sperry Topsiders, BDG Men's skinny denim, charcoal brown lace v-neck tank with super cinched waist on the derriere which was hugged by my blue floral textured jacket and topped off with a long gold and pearl necklace and a vintage Timex wristwatch from my Gramma's generation. He was happily thrilled when I let him in on my little secret that I was wearing men's skinny jeans. He praised on the runway that men should not be afraid to wear women's clothes appropriately and vice-verse. As long as it looks good! He stated that more should do it. Check back for my album to see if you spot some same pieces on both the boy/girl models.
